Turned and Polished Steel Bar

Unlike cold drawn bar, turned and polished bar is not made from the drawing process. Instead of being pulled through a die without being heated, turned and polished bar goes through a process called "turning." Turning is a material removal process, shaving off material from the bar to a specific diameter. Turned and polished bars are usually straighter, have better tolerances, and have much better surface quality compared to their cold drawn counterparts. We offer multiple grades such as 1144 and 1215 that apply to an array of applications

In addition to turned and polished bars, Millennium Metals also offers a ground product that holds even tighter tolerances of diameter and straightness. Turned, ground, and polished bars also have improved surface quality over regular turned and polished bar.

Applications

Turned and polished bars are typically used in applications where straightness is a critical constraint, including:

  • Drive shafts
  • Camshafts
  • Pump shafts
  • Industrial shafts
  • Axles
  • Tie rods

Features

Our Bar Product Features

Millennium’s size capabilities range from approximately .1875 inches (3/16 inches) up to 6.000 inches. Metals we work with are:

  • 1215, 1018, 1117, 11L17, 1030, 1035, 1045, 1137, 1141, 1144, 11L44, 8620, 86L20, 4140, 41L40, 1541, 52100, per ASTM A108 Standard, 1144 per ASTM A311 Class B

Among common grades are 1144 and 1215 steel. 1144 cold drawn bars have high strength and tensile properties, often not needing any heat treatment. Typical applications include screws, pinions, gears, and screws.

1215 cold drawn bars are most commonly used for automatic screw operations. It has excellent machinability, as well as brazing properties and a good surface finish. Applications include couplings, pins, screws, and bushings.
