A514 Steel Plate Supplier

ASTM A514 steel plate, commonly referred to as T1 steel plate, is a quenched and tempered alloy steel built for high-stress structural applications. With a minimum yield strength of 100 KSI for plates up to 2-1/2" thick, A514 performs where standard carbon steel falls short. Millennium Metals stocks A514 steel plate in hot rolled and shot blasted options, positioned in our controlled distribution centers for immediate shipment to manufacturers across the United States.

As a full-service A514 steel plate supplier, we carry a substantial T1 steel plate inventory alongside grades like A36, A572, and AR plate. We can also burn existing inventory to meet nonstandard sizes, and our team can source uncommon grades per customer inquiry. If your application calls for T1 steel plate, we have the inventory and the mill relationships to back it up.

What Makes A514 / T1 Steel Plate Different

A514 achieves its performance through a two-step heat-treatment process. The plate is first heated to a high temperature, then rapidly cooled (quenched), and finally reheated at a lower temperature (tempered). This quenching and tempering cycle changes the grain structure of the steel, producing a material that is significantly harder and tougher than as-rolled carbon plate.

A Variety of Grades

The result is a plate grade with a yield strength of 100,000 PSI minimum and a tensile strength between 110 and 130 KSI, depending on thickness. A514 is available in eight sub-grades: B, S, H, Q, E, F, A, and P. Each grade follows a different chemical composition, but all share the same mechanical property requirements. The "T1" designation originated as an ArcelorMittal trademark and is now used broadly across the industry to refer to this family of quenched and tempered steel plates.

Outperforms Other Alternatives

For applications that demand high performance and the ability to withstand high-impact loads, A514 outperforms nonheat-treated alternatives. That strength-to-weight advantage often allows engineers to specify thinner plates without sacrificing load capacity, reducing overall material weight in the finished product.

Common Applications for A514 Steel Plate

A514 steel plate shows up in industries where structural failure is not an option. Its combination of high yield strength, toughness at low temperatures, and weldability makes it a go-to specification for heavy-duty fabrication.

Crane booms and mobile man-lifts rely on A514 for structural members that must withstand extreme loads without adding unnecessary weight. In heavy truck manufacturing, T1 steel plate is frequently specified for frames and chassis components that face constant stress and vibration. Millennium Metals has been supplying the heavy truck industry for years with the raw materials these applications require.

Construction equipment and agricultural machinery also use A514 extensively. Earthmoving equipment frames, loader arms, and bucket components all benefit from the grade's durability under repeated impact. Bridge structural members, transport trailer frames, and storage tank supports round out the list of typical end uses.

How Millennium Metals Supplies A514 Plate

We position our plate inventory in specific distribution centers for fast turnaround. Millennium's customer base depends on our ability to deliver material to their door within 24 hours upon receipt of an order, and A514 steel plate is no exception. We stock plate gauges from 3/16" to 6" thick, in widths from 48" to 120" and lengths from 48" to 480"+.

For customers with recurring needs, we offer a stocking program with terms of six months to one year across our Midwest locations. This roll-and-hold program locks in pricing and keeps material ready for release on your schedule. Paired with our processing services, we can cut, burn, or prepare A514 plate to your specifications before it ships.

Our fleet of trucks handles daily deliveries from 1,000-pound bar orders up to full truckloads. For larger shipments, we coordinate rail and container logistics to keep freight costs competitive. Every order ships with the documentation you need, including mill test reports for full traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the yield strength of A514 steel plate?

A514 has a minimum yield strength of 100 KSI (690 MPa) for plates up to 2-1/2 inches thick. For plates between 2-1/2 and 6 inches thick, the minimum yield strength drops to 90 KSI. Tensile strength ranges from 110 to 130 KSI, depending on thickness. These values are confirmed on the mill test report that accompanies each plate.

Can A514 plate be used in cold-weather applications?

A514 retains its toughness at low temperatures better than most carbon steel grades. Charpy V-notch impact testing can be specified as a supplementary requirement to confirm the plate meets toughness values for specific operating climates. If your project involves cold-weather service, let our team know so we can source plate with the appropriate impact certifications.

What filler metal should I use to weld A514?

When welding A514 to itself, matching-strength filler metals such as E11018 (SMAW) or E110T5-K4 (FCAW) are commonly used. When joining A514 to a lower-strength steel, the filler metal should match the properties of the lower-strength base material.
